VINTAGE CRATE STAIRS - Part 4

Here are the final pictures of my Vintage Crate Stairs.  Like I said before, these stairs took a lot longer to complete than I had anticipated.  It didn't help that I had a cat and a dog running up and down them every time I painted or that I fell backwards one night when I stood up because my leg had fallen asleep while I was painting or that I sat on my plate of paint one night and splashed paint on the surrounding stairs.  Yes - I am a clutz.  This project was a lot of fun and I am excited to share the final pictures with you!  I hope you enjoy them.

This is the very first stair in the breakfast room.  It is one of my favorites.

I had a great time picking the art work for each stair. I tried to use things that are meaningful to our family.

The white paint on this stair is where the dog ran through the paint.

I should probably mention that the wainscoting, spindles and such are painted with primer in some of the pictures.  Other pictures show them in their original state, some show them sanded and this one with it primed.  More on that project later.  Please refer to my previous posts for before pictures.

There are some in my family who think that I distressed some of the stairs too much and in hind site they may be right since they will be walked on everyday. I really wanted them to have that weathered/used look.  I guess time will tell if they are too weathered.

For the numbers on the stairs I chose to use the kids date of birth.  To most people they are just numbers but to the kids they have a special meaning.

I wanted the stairs to be fun and a conversation piece.

We decided to leave the gaps at the bottom of the stairs. We thought it looked more like the stairs were made from pieces of old crates.

I was really disappointed with the way the Converse stair turned out. At the time I was so tired that I didn't want to look at another stair. I'm not sure if it was the knots in the wood or the stencil being off or just artist error but it looks weird to me. I will probably end up sanding it off and putting something else. But for now it stays.

Our family LOVES pop corn so I decided to use Jolly Time Pop Corn for one of the stairs.
I added a few bottle caps to the white stair to add some color.  Eventually, I would like to have them going across the width of the stair.  I also added Dr. Pepper bottle caps to the left side of the Dr. Pepper stair and will probably continue to fill them in as we collect them.

Well there you have it.  I hope the stairs inspire you like Donna's inspired me. It is a lot of work but so worth it in the end.  I know we will enjoy our stairs for many years to come.

Let me know what you think and as always - thanks for stopping by. Susan

  32. Great job on the stairs. I can only imagine all the work you put into them. As soon as I saw the photo on 2805 Potpourri party I thought of Donna's stairs. You did a great job taking the inspiration and adding your only family 'twist' to them.

  33. Wow! I love these stairs! Now, not sure; were the graphics on the crates (which is what I originally thought), or did you add them? I know that you added the numbers. Love the idea of using numbers that have meaning. I do the same. I won a ramsign on a give away. Chose #7 - it is my lucky no. and the no. of members in my immediately family. Also the month of my birth. We hae an unfinshed basement. Oh how I would love to do something similar when we finish it. Thanks so much for sharing. Now a new follower.
