Last summer I painted our entire kitchen solo which I'll blog about soon. As part of the update for the kitchen, I took out the atrocious florescent light box above our island along with a couple of aprons that were hiding more atrocious florescent lighting above my kitchen sink. That left me with a pretty good pile of wood. Most of the pieces were pretty big so I decided to try and make a sign like the ones I have drooled over at Pottery Barn. Once I made the first sign I was hooked and starting making all kinds of signs for around the house.
Let me take you on a tour of my signs.
I made this sign to go above my pantry. I used a layering technique. I started with bright turquoise and layered other colors on top. Eventually I decided that I didn't really like all of the colors. And I felt like the sign was to small for the space.
So I removed it and went back to the wood pile. This is what I came up with. It is basically the same sign just different colors and the sign is much larger. I just love it though. It is my favorite sign by far. I love how chippy and worn it looks. I drilled two holes at the top to make it look like it had hung outside a grocery store somewhere long ago. This sign I made with my cricket. I painted the board first and then applied the vinyl letters on top.
This eat sign hangs above the the table in the breakfast room. I just love this sign too. I especially like the knot hole in the middle of the "A". It took several steps to get the sign painted. I'll have to put up a tutorial for this one sometime soon!
My next sign was the one below. It hangs above the kitchen cabinets. I keep a fruit bowl on the counter below it.
This sign hangs on the wall next to my desk in the kitchen. It too is one of my favorites! I love the look that the stain gave it. I'm thinking that it needs some holes drilled into the corners.
This sign hangs above the entrance to the laundry room. I know it is everywhere on the internet but the wording makes me chuckle. Unfortunately, my son takes it literally!
Once inside the laundry room, you'll see this sign above the washer and dryer. Sorry the picture isn't the greatest. I should have turned the light off. Duh! I used a turquoise as a base for this sign.
This sign hangs on the door to my half bath. It is located in a really small hallway and is directly across from a closet. You know - the "JUNK" closet. The place where things go in but never come out. Guests kept mistaking it for the bathroom door so I thought this sign would alleviate any further confusion and save me some embarrassment in the future.
This Hokey Pokey sign was created using a mix of Ritz Dye and Polycrylic. I applied the lettering to the bare wood. Once applied, I came back with mix of Ritz Dye and Polycrylic and painted it on top of the letters. Once dry I peeled the letters off and gently sanded. This was the end product. It hangs on the wall leading up to our game room. Right above my Vintage Crate Stairs which you can read about here.
That's it for the sign tour. Hope you enjoyed them and maybe even got a laugh out of one or two. If you have any questions about any of the signs please feel free to leave a comment and I will answer it. Have a great week!
XOXO,
Susan
